Benefits
The Benefits being gain by being part of a high school athletics team
are immeasurable. Participants learn valuable skills which serve them
for a lifetime. The friendships made through athletics are enough
reason to play sports. Jack Roberts, Executive Director of the Michigan
High School Athletics Association, used a recent speech to highlight
some facts which demonstrate why students should get involved in
sports. Here are some excerpts from that speech:
Participants in
school activities generally have higher grade point averages, lower
dropout rates, and better daily attendance.
Participants in school activities have fewer discipline problems, and
lower rates of tobacco and alcohol than other nonparticipating supplies.
Participants in school activities feel better about school and about education.
Of course, having fun and excitement are good reasons to play, but here
are a couple of facts which show that there is much more to it:
"95% of 'fortune 500' executives participated in school athletics (only
47% were National Honor Society members)." -Fortune Magazine
"Extracurricular participation is a school's best predictor of an adult's success."
-Douglas Heath, based on a 40-year survey.

Drug and Alcohol PolicyPURPOSE: The intent of this policy is to address the serious and
harmful effects substance use and abuse can have on an athlete. All
teams and groups who are under the direction of the Athletic Department
will be governed by this policy. The policy is not intended to be a
punishment but rather an incentive to help athletes make good choices
that promote healthful lifestyles both socially and physically. It is
further the intend of this policy is to provide assistance to help
athletes and their families cope with problems that might lead to
substance use and abuse by making available social and counseling
services.
DEFINITION: Students who are part of a team or group that
fall under the direction of the hazel Park Athletic Department are
considered to be representatives of that team or group 24 hours a day,
seven days a week, during the entire school year. Violation of the
Athletic Department Substance Use and abuse policy anytime during the
school year will result in enforcement of the department policy rules.
Included in the administration of this policy is the possession or use
of any alcohol, drugs, or tobacco products other than those medically
prescribed by a physician to the individual.
PROCEDURES:
A.
First Violation- After confirmation of the first violation the student
will lose eligibility for the next two consecutive interscholastic
events or two weeks of a season in which the student is a participant,
whichever is the greater. Referral to a professional agency could be
recommended.
B. Second Violation- After confirmation of
the second violation, the student will lose eligibility for the next
six consecutive interscholastic events or sic weeks of a season in
which the student is a participant, which ever is greater. If the
violation was for alcohol or other chemical use, before a student may
reenter the program, he/she must show in writing that he/she has
received counseling from some professional counseling agency dealing
with substance abuse.
C. Third Violation- After
confirmation of the third violation the student will be dismissed from
the team and excluded from all interscholastic participation for the
remainder of the school year.
If the violation was for
alcohol or other chemical use, in order for the student to be allowed
to participate in athletics in future years, the student must show
evidence that he/she has completed or is currently in a chemical
dependency or treatment program. (The cost of the program is the
responsibility of the family). At the time a student may request a
meeting with the high school athletic director, the district athletic
director and the high school principal to discuss possible
reinstatement.
D. Suspension does not end with the
conclusion of and individual sport season, but is continued on into the
next participation athletic season.
E. Penalties shall
be accumulative beginning with the student's first participation on a
high school athletic team and continue until the completion of the
twelfth grade. Furthermore, for a student to fulfill the intent of the
consequences of this policy, he/she must complete the season in which
the punishment was served.
F. Athletes having been found
in violation of this policy may appeal the decision of the high school
athletic director and request a hearing with the building principal,
the district athletic director, and the superintendent of schools.

EligibilityAll athletes must be a current Hazel Park High School student in good standing who are working towards graduation.
All athletes must follow the Michigan High School Athletic Administration requirements. Academically, these include:
Must have passed at least 4 classes the previous semester.
Must be currently passing at least 4 classes.
In
addition to the M.H.S.A.A. minimum standards, H.P.H.S. students must be
passing at least 5 classes or attend study table sessions on Monday,
Wednesday, and Friday mornings. Students who are assigned to study
table have only one week to improve their grades or lose eligibility.
The
state requires each athlete's eligibility to be checked at least once
per semester. Hazel Park High School checks their athletes more
frequently and thoroughly than almost any of our neighboring districts.
We have our athletes take their individual eligibility form to their
teachers biweekly during their sport season. Our 6-week report card
periods provide another means for frequent monitoring of student
academic progress.
