Annual Education Report

April 22, 2016

Dear Parents and Community Members:

We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER), which provides key information on the 2014-15 educational progress for the Hazel Park Adult & Alternative Nine Mile center. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, accountability, and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Michelle Laporte for assistance.

The AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting the following web site https://goo.gl/BMHr7j, or you may review a copy in the main office at the Nine Mile building.

Hazel Park Adult & Alternative Center faces the challenge of educating previously unsuccessful students from a wide variety of educational backgrounds in a very small setting. To make this possible, we have chosen to provide most of our classes in an online format, to allow for a high degree of personalization in scheduling. As many of our students are below grade level in Math, we offer online math classes in a math lab setting, facilitated by a retired math teacher with years of experience. As many of our students also come in below grade level in reading, we have created elective classes that provide remediation in reading, as well as adapted English classes that are modified for lower reading levels while still meeting all state content expectations.

State law requires that we also report additional information:

Hazel Park Adult & Alternative admits all eligible high school completion students ages 16 and up who apply.

Our school improvement plan is a living plan, which is constantly adapting and evolving to reflect current realities and maximize positive changes. Many of the strategies that were previously created are already well underway, and additional goals and strategies (based upon new feedback and research) are currently in the process of being implemented. We welcome participation by any interested students and community members who would like to help our School Improvement Team in their goal of continuously improving Hazel Park Adult & Alternative Education.

The Hazel Park Adult & Alternative School serves students who were not previously successful in the traditional school setting.  Smaller class sizes, small school atmosphere, personalized scheduling, self-paced learning, and more opportunities for individual attention and counseling help these students to succeed.  Students are given the opportunity to take a wide variety of classes through our on-line GradPoint, Write-To-Learn, Odyssey and Edgenuity programs.

All Hazel Park district schools follow the state curriculum.  Most of the core curriculum at Hazel Park Adult & Alternative is provided via Pearson’s Gradpoint program, and this curriculum, along with state standards correlations, is available through Gradpoint.

Parents of our students have, so far, been unable to attend any regularly-scheduled Meet-the-Teacher events or conferences. We offer individually-scheduled meetings with parents at their convenience.

Dual Enrollment / College Credits:

We had no students that were dual enrolled.

We do not offer college equivalent courses.

No students were enrolled in college equivalent courses.

None of our students received scores toward college credits.

Hazel Park Adult & Alternative School takes great pride in our students’ determination to overcome the obstacles that stand between them and success in completing their education. We are committed to helping their dreams of earning a high school diploma become reality.

Dear Parents,

Thank you for allowing Hazel Park to be part of your child’s education. Enclosed you will find the results of your child’s performance on the MSTEP, Michigan’s new statewide exam. As this is the first year of the exam there is little data to support the ranking of your child’s performance. Hazel Park will be using this information to chart progress year to year.

After nearly 45 years of the MEAP, the State of Michigan transitioned to the MSTEP. Many states across the country changed their test last year looking to introduce their students to more rigorous standards. Not only did your child likely take a more rigorous test last year, but took the MSTEP online. Michigan has adopted higher standards for students in English Language Arts and Mathematics, and the MSTEP was built to see how close our students are to reaching them.

This year’s test scores may be lower than results from the MEAP test because the MSTEP is not just new, it’s more challenging. This is not a reflection on Hazel Park students, but on all the progress that has been happening across Michigan. We encourage families to remember that these changes are good for our kids, and to keep them in perspective.

Teachers and parents can use student scores to make sure they’re doing the right things to support students. Working together, we can identify where students excel and where they need additional help, and find ways to better support students. Hazel Park believes that these tests are just one component that we will be using to measure the growth that your child is making year to year.

We will be placing a video produced by the State Board of Education on our website that you can view to give you more information regarding the MStep. We hope that this, with the scores, you will begin to understand some of the changes that have occurred with the state assessment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AM55xZZuNU

We are extremely excited in Hazel Park about the changes we are making in our schools. We are truly excited to begin a new era that focuses on every child’s individual growth and achievement. We look forward to our shared partnering in making a difference in your child’s education.

As always please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.
