Annual Education Report

April 19, 2016

Dear Parents and Community Members:

We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER), which provides key information on the 2014-15 educational progress for Webb Elementary School. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, accountability, and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Mrs. Corri Nastasi, Principal, for assistance.

The AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting the following web site https://goo.gl/skt7Ka, or you may review a copy in the main office at your child’s school.

At Webb we continue to face many challenges.  Student achievement in both reading and math is a concern.  We are happy to continue to use intervention teachers to help support our most struggling students.  We will also be offering an extended day program to offer additional support.  Another challenge we are faced with is the lack of a strong curriculum to be used for core instruction.  Throughout this year we hope to work toward building that curriculum so that we can improve teaching and learning.  We are excited to have 1:1 technology this year at Webb, and we plan to work to improve our skills so that we can use this technology to provide rich learning experiences for our students.

State law requires that we also report additional information.

Students who live in the Webb attendance area are assigned to Webb Elementary School.  Students within the Hazel Park School District but not within the Webb attendance area may apply for Open Enrollment.  Students who reside within Oakland County may apply for 105 Schools of Choice Status.  Students who reside in counties contiguous to Oakland County (primarily Wayne and Macomb) may apply for 105C Schools of Choice Status.

The status of the 3-5 year school improvement plan:

Webb Elementary School works diligently to meet all deadlines required by the state.  The status of our school improvement plan is of great importance to us.  Webb Elementary School has worked and continues to work to meet the reading, math and writing goals we set for ourselves in our school improvement plan.

Webb Elementary School in Ferndale, Michigan is one of three elementary schools in the Hazel Park School District. It serves approximately 374 students in grades K through 5 with 13 general education classrooms and 7 special education classrooms for students with special needs.  Webb also has 3 Title I reading interventionists, a speech and language teacher, a part time school psychologist and a resource room teacher as well as art, music, physical education and media/technology programs.  Every classroom is fully equipped with the latest in interactive technology, including video projection and audio systems in each classroom and either a laptop (for students in grades 3-5) or an ipad (for students in grades K-2) for each student.

The Michigan Department of Education provides an academic core curriculum that specifies the standards, benchmarks and content expectations at each grade level and content area K-12.  Webb Elementary School works to provide students with a comprehensive curriculum that meets their diverse needs and prepares them for a productive future.  The State of Michigan has adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as our curricular standards and benchmarks.  Information on the core curriculum is available at www.mi.gov/mde.

The aggregate student achievement results for any local competency tests or nationally normed tests:

Webb Elementary students do not participate in nationally normed tests.  Local competency tests in reading show that at the end of the school year in spring of 2015, 74% of students were reading at or above level according to the Fountas and Pinnell Benchmark Assessment System.

Identify the number and percent of students represented by parents at parent-teacher conferences.

In the fall of 2014, we had 164, or 44% of our students represented by parents at parent-teacher conferences.  One hundred students, or 27%, were represented by parents at parent-teacher conferences in the winter of 2015.

In conclusion, the staff of Webb Elementary School should be commended for a job well done.  While we understand that there is room for growth in many areas, we are proud of the accomplishments of our students and teachers, and we eagerly look forward to the new school year.

Sincerely,

Corri Nastasi

MSTEP

Dear Parents,

Thank you for allowing Hazel Park to be part of your child’s education. Enclosed you will find the results of your child’s performance on the MSTEP, Michigan’s new statewide exam. As this is the first year of the exam there is little data to support the ranking of your child’s performance. Hazel Park will be using this information to chart progress year to year.

After nearly 45 years of the MEAP, the State of Michigan transitioned to the MSTEP. Many states across the country changed their test last year looking to introduce their students to more rigorous standards. Not only did your child likely take a more rigorous test last year, but took the MSTEP online. Michigan has adopted higher standards for students in English Language Arts and Mathematics, and the MSTEP was built to see how close our students are to reaching them.

This year’s test scores may be lower than results from the MEAP test because the MSTEP is not just new, it’s more challenging. This is not a reflection on Hazel Park students, but on all the progress that has been happening across Michigan. We encourage families to remember that these changes are good for our kids, and to keep them in perspective.

Teachers and parents can use student scores to make sure they’re doing the right things to support students. Working together, we can identify where students excel and where they need additional help, and find ways to better support students. Hazel Park believes that these tests are just one component that we will be using to measure the growth that your child is making year to year.

We will be placing a video produced by the State Board of Education on our website that you can view to give you more information regarding the MStep. We hope that this, with the scores, you will begin to understand some of the changes that have occurred with the state assessment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AM55xZZuNU

We are extremely excited in Hazel Park about the changes we are making in our schools. We are truly excited to begin a new era that focuses on every child’s individual growth and achievement. We look forward to our shared partnering in making a difference in your child’s education.

As always please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Respectfully,

Amy Kruppe, Ed.D. Superintendent

Under this law, you may contact your child’s school and request information regarding which subjects your child’s teacher is certified to teach.

Please feel free to request this information by contacting the school office.

WEBB ANNUAL REPORT

Our Mission:
We at Webb Elementary School, working with our community, will encourage everyone to accept their responsibilities, to treat themselves and others with respect and to become lifelong learners so that we can live successfully in our diverse and ever changing world. We will maintain a safe learning environment which will include creating positive relations between staff and students and between students and students. This will include emphasizing positive values, social responsibilities and democratic ideas.

WEBB ATTENDANCE POLICY

Students with good attendance have a much better chance of learning and getting good grades. Good attendance is important training for future employment and positive work habits that employers across the country are looking for as well. Parents, no doubt, want their children to achieve both good skills and positive work habits and most of you work with us to have good school attendance for their children. Working together, the school district and the cities of Hazel Park and Ferndale have developed a policy and passed local ordinances to focus on the limited number of students who miss an unusual amount of school and parents who allow healthy children to miss school

WEBB VOLUNTEER INFORMATION

Volunteers are an important part of the day to day operations at Webb School. We couldnʼt do it without you! Volunteers at Webb drive on field trips, read to children, sell bagels, check homework, help at celebrations, listen to children read, help in the lunchroom and much much more! Without parental help, these programs cannot take place. You can make a difference in a
childʼs life by giving as little as 30 minutes once a week. Volunteer Form

WEBB PARKING LOT

Because of the traffic congestion in the Webb parking lot at arrival and dismissal times I need your help! In order to provide a safe environment for children and to alleviate as much traffic congestion as possible, please read and follow these guidelines.

WEBB PARENT / STUDENT HANDBOOK

The Webb Elementary School Faculty, Support Staff, and I are extremely pleased to have the opportunity to help educate your children. We know that it is best accomplished when we work with you as a team. This partnership we form is reflected in our school’s Mission Statement and in our School Improvement Plan. The purpose of this handbook is to answer many of the questions that arise over the course of a school year regarding procedures within the building. We hope you will take the time to read it with your children, discuss it with them, and share your expectations for their success at Webb. We also hope that you will keep the handbook, along with the Student Conduct and Discipline booklet in a place that you can remember where it is and refer to it frequently throughout the year.
