Annual Education Report

April 19, 2016

Dear Parents and Community Members:

We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER), which provides key information on the 2014-15 educational progress for United Oaks Elementary School. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, accountability, and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Mr. Mark Brown, principal, for assistance.

The AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting the following web sitehttps://goo.gl/nDfZjO, or you may review a copy in the main office at United Oaks Elementary School.

When referencing this single year of M-Step data, United Oaks is faced with achievement gaps.  Focused Instruction Time, reading and math intervention, our 1 to 1 technology initiative, extended day and year programs are all ways in which we are working to close those achievement gaps.

State law requires that we also report additional information.

PROCESS FOR ASSIGNING PUPILS TO THE SCHOOL

Students who live in the United Oaks attendance area are assigned to

United Oaks School.  Students within the Hazel Park School District but

not within the United Oaks attendance area may apply for Open

Enrollment.  Students who reside within Oakland County may apply for

105 Schools of Choice Status.  Students who reside in counties

contiguous to Oakland County (primarily Wayne and Macomb) may

apply for 105C Schools of Choice Status.

THE STATUS OF THE 3-5 YEAR SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT PLAN

We are engaged in the 3-5 year improvement process aligned with the

District School Improvement Plan as well as our improvement goals.

Our School Improvement Plan is reviewed by staff and revised

        annually.

A BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF OUR SCHOOL

education services for qualifying students.  We offer an extended day

program in addition to our extended year program.  A number of

parental involvement activities also take place throughout the year.

CORE CURRICULUM

The Michigan Department of Education provides an academic core

curriculum that specifies the standards, benchmarks and content

expectations at each grade level and content area K-12.  United Oaks

School works to provide students with a comprehensive curriculum

curriculum that meets their diverse needs and prepares them for a productive future.

The State of Michigan has adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as our

curricular standards and benchmarks.  Information on the core

       curriculum is available at www.mi.gov/mde.

The teachers and staff of United Oaks Elementary School work collaboratively with our diverse student population to provide effective teaching and services.  Careful consideration is given to new initiatives as well as those we currently use.  Our goal is to improve teaching and learning for all students, whether a new initiative is implemented or not.  We recognize that our best resources are our teachers for the students we are entrusted with.  We continually work to improve the Student – Teacher – Parent connection.

MSTEP

Dear Parents,

Thank you for allowing Hazel Park to be part of your child’s education. Enclosed you will find the results of your child’s performance on the MSTEP, Michigan’s new statewide exam. As this is the first year of the exam there is little data to support the ranking of your child’s performance. Hazel Park will be using this information to chart progress year to year.

After nearly 45 years of the MEAP, the State of Michigan transitioned to the MSTEP. Many states across the country changed their test last year looking to introduce their students to more rigorous standards. Not only did your child likely take a more rigorous test last year, but took the MSTEP online. Michigan has adopted higher standards for students in English Language Arts and Mathematics, and the MSTEP was built to see how close our students are to reaching them.

This year’s test scores may be lower than results from the MEAP test because the MSTEP is not just new, it’s more challenging. This is not a reflection on Hazel Park students, but on all the progress that has been happening across Michigan. We encourage families to remember that these changes are good for our kids, and to keep them in perspective.

Teachers and parents can use student scores to make sure they’re doing the right things to support students. Working together, we can identify where students excel and where they need additional help, and find ways to better support students. Hazel Park believes that these tests are just one component that we will be using to measure the growth that your child is making year to year.

We will be placing a video produced by the State Board of Education on our website that you can view to give you more information regarding the MStep. We hope that this, with the scores, you will begin to understand some of the changes that have occurred with the state assessment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AM55xZZuNU

We are extremely excited in Hazel Park about the changes we are making in our schools. We are truly excited to begin a new era that focuses on every child’s individual growth and achievement. We look forward to our shared partnering in making a difference in your child’s education.

As always please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Respectfully,

Amy Kruppe, Ed.D. Superintendent
