Annual Education Report

April 18, 2016

Dear Parents and Community Members:

We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER), which provides key information on the 2014-15 educational progress for Hoover Elementary School. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, accountability, and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Leslie Baker, Principal, for assistance.

The AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting the following web site https://goo.gl/S0iY5P, or you may review a copy in the main office at your child’s school.

Hoover School is challenged with having a large achievement gap between our lowest and highest performing students, especially in math.  We are meeting the challenge with an additional interventionist and the implementation of MTSS - Multi-tiered System of Supports. "The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) defines Multi-tiered System of Supports (MTSS) as an integrated, multi-tiered system of instruction, assessment, and intervention designed to meet the achievement and behavioral health needs of ALL learners. In short, an MTSS framework is designed to ensure that each and every student that walks into a classroom will have his or her individual needs met through high-quality instruction."

State law requires that we also report additional information on the following:

Students who live in the Hoover attendance area are assigned to

Hoover Elementary School.  Students within the Hazel Park School District but

not within the Hoover attendance area may apply for Open Enrollment.  Students who reside within Oakland County may apply for 105 Schools of Choice Status.  Students who reside in counties contiguous to Oakland County (primarily Wayne and Macomb) may apply for 105C Schools of Choice Status.

Hoover’s School Improvement Plan is used to make instructional decisions and guide the staff in creating a positive learning environment, which provides the opportunity for all students to succeed.  It is reviewed and revised each year.

Hoover Elementary School is located on Hoover Ave. in the city of Hazel Park.  There are 356 students in grades K-5.  We are a RTI (Response to Intervention/Instruction) School, providing intervention for our struggling students.  We also have special education programs/services for our students in need.

The Michigan Department of Education provides an academic core curriculum that specifies the standards, benchmarks and content expectations at each grade level and content area K-12.  Hoover Elementary School works to provide students with a comprehensive curriculum that meets their diverse needs and prepares them for a productive future.  The State of Michigan has adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as our curricular standards and benchmarks.  Information on the core curriculum is available at www.mi.gov/mde.

Hoover uses Fountas & Pinnell reading inventory to assess our students' reading levels. The percentage of students who were on or above benchmark for 2014-15 are as follows: Kindergarten 81.3%, 1st grade 50%, 2nd grade 55.8%, 3rd grade 75%, and 4th grade 69.6%

The number of students represented by parents at Parent/Teacher Conferences was 288 out of 356 students.  This means that 81% of our student population had a parent attending a conference.

Hoover Elementary School has an outstanding staff of caring individuals who help create a positive environment where all students are valued and given every opportunity to achieve success. We not only provide effective instruction for our students' academic success, but also care for the whole child with our Building Healthy Community approach. We team with our parents to help foster a home/school connection. Although we have many students from outside our district, we have continued to embody the characteristics of a community school that erases the notion of boundaries, and instead ties us together with the goal of providing the best possible education for all children.

Sincerely,

Leslie Baker

MSTEP

Dear Parents,

Thank you for allowing Hazel Park to be part of your child’s education. Enclosed you will find the results of your child’s performance on the MSTEP, Michigan’s new statewide exam. As this is the first year of the exam there is little data to support the ranking of your child’s performance. Hazel Park will be using this information to chart progress year to year.

After nearly 45 years of the MEAP, the State of Michigan transitioned to the MSTEP. Many states across the country changed their test last year looking to introduce their students to more rigorous standards. Not only did your child likely take a more rigorous test last year, but took the MSTEP online. Michigan has adopted higher standards for students in English Language Arts and Mathematics, and the MSTEP was built to see how close our students are to reaching them.

This year’s test scores may be lower than results from the MEAP test because the MSTEP is not just new, it’s more challenging. This is not a reflection on Hazel Park students, but on all the progress that has been happening across Michigan. We encourage families to remember that these changes are good for our kids, and to keep them in perspective.

Teachers and parents can use student scores to make sure they’re doing the right things to support students. Working together, we can identify where students excel and where they need additional help, and find ways to better support students. Hazel Park believes that these tests are just one component that we will be using to measure the growth that your child is making year to year.

We will be placing a video produced by the State Board of Education on our website that you can view to give you more information regarding the MStep. We hope that this, with the scores, you will begin to understand some of the changes that have occurred with the state assessment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AM55xZZuNU

We are extremely excited in Hazel Park about the changes we are making in our schools. We are truly excited to begin a new era that focuses on every child’s individual growth and achievement. We look forward to our shared partnering in making a difference in your child’s education.

As always please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Respectfully,

Amy Kruppe, Ed.D. Superintendent

News

Ms. Conlon’s fifth grade students

Ms. Conlon’s fifth grade students did some “dot” style painting inspired by a recent class Ms. Conlon took at Painting With A Twist in Ferndale. Instead of using the brush end of a paintbrush the students used the other end. Dipping it in paint and creating their version of a “Twisted Turkey”. Along with displaying their artistic talents the students practiced patience and perseverance as they worked on their art piece.

Hoover School - Million Misfit Sock Day

Last Friday, October 23rd, Hoover School participated in the Million Misfit Sock March. Students were encouraged to wear mismatched socks for the day to celebrate differences and take a stand against bullying. Ms. Conlon and Mrs. Bentz’s fifth grade students embraced the day and almost 100% of the kids supported the cause by wearing socks that didn’t match to school that day. Take a peek below. Do any of those feet look familiar?

Chromebooks in Action at Hoover Elementary

The fifth grade students at Hoover Elementary are in full “technology” mode. They have discovered all different ways that they can use their Chromebooks in their learning. During the month of September the students were introduced to several applications that they use on a daily basis in class.

One of the biggest changes was becoming part of Google Classroom. Students find assignments downloaded for them right to their computer. They complete various assignments on Google Classroom and submit them directly to their teacher. No pencil or paper needed! As one student exclaimed, “Pretty cool!”.

The fifth grade also uses their Chromebooks to keep track of their reading this year on Google Sheets and also visit websites such as Quizlet to preview and practice weekly vocabulary. This week they will start using Google Docs to draft, revise and edit their Personal Narrative papers and they have also  begun to learn the process of creating powerpoint presentations in Google Sheets for future projects.

The Chromebooks have been a powerful and engaging learning tool so far this year and this is just the beginning!
