Annual Education Report

April 19, 2016

Dear Parents and Community Members:

We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER), which provides key information on the 2014-15 educational progress for Hazel Park Junior High School. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, accountability, and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Mrs. Tammy Scholz, principal, for assistance.

The AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting the following web site https://goo.gl/WiQvXl, or you may review a copy in the main office at your child’s school.

At Hazel Park Junior High we continue to face many challenges.  Student achievement in both reading and math is a concern.  We are happy to continue to use intervention teachers to help support our most struggling students as well as multiple methods of differentiated instruction through technology based programs.   We have had and will continue to offer an extended day program to offer additional support. Throughout this year we hope to work toward building a cohesive curriculum so that we can improve teaching and learning.  We are excited to have 1:1 technology this year at HPJH, and we plan to work to improve our skills so that we can use this technology to provide rich learning experiences for our students.

State law requires that we also report additional information.  :

Students who live in Hazel Park are assigned to Hazel Park Junior High School.  Students who reside within Oakland County may apply for 105 Schools of Choice Status.  Students who reside in counties contiguous to Oakland County (primarily Wayne and Macomb) may apply for 105C Schools of Choice Status.

The status of the 3-5 year school improvement plan:

Hazel Park Junior High works diligently to meet all deadlines required by the state.  The status of our school improvement plan is of great importance to us.  Through recent revisions over the last two years, Hazel Park Junior High achieved compliancy from MDE.

Hazel Park Junior High School serves approximately 564 students in grades 6 through 8.  It is the only junior high school in the Hazel Park Community Schools district.  Every classroom is fully equipped with the latest in interactive technology, including video projection and audio systems.

The Michigan Department of Education provides an academic core curriculum that specifies the standards, benchmarks and content expectations at each grade level and content area K-12.  Hazel Park Junior High School works to provide students with a comprehensive curriculum that meets their diverse needs and prepares them for a productive future.  The State of Michigan has adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as our curricular standards and benchmarks.  Information on the core curriculum is available at www.mi.gov/mde.

Identify the number and percent of students represented by parents at parent-teacher conferences.

Two hundred fourteen students, or 35%, were represented by parents at parent-teacher conferences in the fall of 2014.  One hundred three students, or 17%, were represented by parents at parent-teacher conferences in the winter of 2015.

In conclusion, the staff of Hazel Park Junior High School should be commended for their unwavering commitment to the students academic, emotional and social growth.  While we understand that there is room for growth in many areas, we are proud of the accomplishments of our students and teachers, and we eagerly look forward to the new school year.

Sincerely,

Tammy Scholz

MSTEP

Dear Parents,

Thank you for allowing Hazel Park to be part of your child’s education. Enclosed you will find the results of your child’s performance on the MSTEP, Michigan’s new statewide exam. As this is the first year of the exam there is little data to support the ranking of your child’s performance. Hazel Park will be using this information to chart progress year to year.

After nearly 45 years of the MEAP, the State of Michigan transitioned to the MSTEP. Many states across the country changed their test last year looking to introduce their students to more rigorous standards. Not only did your child likely take a more rigorous test last year, but took the MSTEP online. Michigan has adopted higher standards for students in English Language Arts and Mathematics, and the MSTEP was built to see how close our students are to reaching them.

This year’s test scores may be lower than results from the MEAP test because the MSTEP is not just new, it’s more challenging. This is not a reflection on Hazel Park students, but on all the progress that has been happening across Michigan. We encourage families to remember that these changes are good for our kids, and to keep them in perspective.

Teachers and parents can use student scores to make sure they’re doing the right things to support students. Working together, we can identify where students excel and where they need additional help, and find ways to better support students. Hazel Park believes that these tests are just one component that we will be using to measure the growth that your child is making year to year.

We will be placing a video produced by the State Board of Education on our website that you can view to give you more information regarding the MStep. We hope that this, with the scores, you will begin to understand some of the changes that have occurred with the state assessment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AM55xZZuNU

We are extremely excited in Hazel Park about the changes we are making in our schools. We are truly excited to begin a new era that focuses on every child’s individual growth and achievement. We look forward to our shared partnering in making a difference in your child’s education.

As always please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Respectfully,

Amy Kruppe, Ed.D. Superintendent
