Dear Parents, Families and Friends:


Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year at Hazel Park High School!


I would first like to introduce myself to you.  I am Dr. Carla Postell, the new Principal at Hazel Park High School. I come to you from L'Anse Creuse Public Schools where I served as a High School Associate Principal for the past three years. I have also served as a High School Assistant Principal/Academy Director at Ypsilanti High School. Prior to becoming a school administrator, I held a number of teaching positions, including Reading Language Arts Teacher and High School English Teacher.  I also have experience teaching college level students who are working to obtain their Master of Arts in Educational Leadership.  Last, I earned my Doctorate of Education from Western Michigan University, and my Master of Arts in Education and Bachelors of Arts in English from the University of Michigan.


Now that you know a little bit more about me, I want you to know that I am hoping that your summer has gone well, and that you are just as excited as I am for the beginning of the new school year.  It is my privilege and honor to join the Hazel Park Schools community.  I look forward to an exciting school year as we work together to foster a culture of learning.


My goal is for us to provide all students with the opportunity to excel in academics, athletics, and the fine arts so that they may become positive, contributing members of our school and community.  We will accomplish this goal by setting high academic expectations for ALL students,  having staff and parents work together as a team, addressing school culture, engaging the community, and reaching out to parents for support with academic and behavioral concerns to ensure that all Hazel Park High School graduates are prepared for college and 21st century careers.

Again, I am very excited to be a member of the Hazel Park High School team.  I anticipate an exciting school year as we work together to foster a community of learning. I look forward to meeting and working with parents, staff, community members, and students to make this a great school year.

2015 WELCOME PACKET AND INFORMATION

ITEMS OF IMPORTANCE FOR THE 2015-16 SCHOOL YEAR

1. Your son or daughter must be present at registration, which will be held on Tuesday, September 1st, and Thursday, September 3rd, in the main gym. (Please follow the schedule below.) At registration, students will receive their school ID, schedule, and have their school picture taken. Students will need their school ID to enter the building on the first day of school, September 9th. The enclosed student emergency card (for ALL students), Student Technology Acceptable Use Policy form (for 9th grade students and new enrollees), and Concussion Awareness acknowledgement form (for 9th grade students and new enrollees) must be completed and returned to the high school on registration day. Please note that a parent/guardian signature is REQUIRED on these forms. Also enclosed is a student school picture form that must be completed and returned to the high school on registration day if you are ordering school pictures.

If your child is unable to attend registration, he/she should NOT report to school on September 9th until the make-up registration time, between 1:00-3:00 p.m. Make-up registration will take place in the media center. Tuesday, September 1st, 8:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. senior (12th grade) registration 9:30 a.m. - 11:00 a.m. freshman (9th grade) registration Thursday, September 3rd, 12:30 p.m. - 1:45 p.m. junior (11th grade) registration 1:45 p.m. - 3:15 p.m. sophomore (10th grade) registration Wednesday, September 9th, 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. make-up registration for all grades

2. High school counselors will be available on Tuesday, September 1st, and Thursday, September 3rd, from 8:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. to address any student schedule problems.

3. Kaiser Studio photographers will take student school pictures during registration and make-up registration days. Please complete the enclosed picture form and note that payment is due when the student is photographed. Kaiser Studio accepts checks and money orders made payable to Kaiser Studio, cash (exact amount only please), or you may pay with a credit card by completing the credit card form. Picture retake day is Wednesday, October 21st, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Students must be in compliance with the dress code to be photographed (i.e. no clothing portraying themes of gang dress, sexism, sexual harassment, profanity, illegal drug, alcohol or tobacco use; no strapless, backless, spaghetti straps, tank or halter tops or dresses; no see through, low cut or revealing clothing, minimal cleavage; no hats, bandanas, or head coverings of any kind).

4. Parking permits are not required for student vehicles, however, students must park in the east (back) parking lot.

5. The first day of school is Wednesday, September 9th, and is a half-day session, 7:45 a.m. to 10:58 a.m. Thursday, September 10th, will begin the normal school day schedule, 7:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

NO CHILD LEFT BEHIND ACT OF 2001

The federal No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 allows parents of students who attend Title I funded schools to request certification information about the qualifications of the teachers and paraprofessionals assigned to their child. Under this law, you may contact your child’s school and request information regarding which subjects your child’s teacher is certified to teach.
