Graduation Activities

Class Day and Commencement ceremonies are only two months away! Please take a moment to carefully review the following information pertaining to graduation and graduation activities.

March 20, 2014
Dear Parent(s) of Class of 2014 Senior:
Class Day and Commencement ceremonies are only two months away! Please take a moment to carefully review the following information pertaining to graduation and graduation activities.

SENIOR EARLY DISMISSAL - The Hazel Park Board of Education has adopted a proposal from the Hazel Park High School administration for early dismissal for seniors. Seniors will officially be done with regular classes on Friday, May 30, and are expected to be in class every day until May 30. There is no senior skip day. Teachers will administer final exams to seniors prior to May 30. Seniors should not return to school after May 30 until Class Day rehearsal on Monday, June 2, at 12:00 noon, unless they are making up missed assignments.

FINES_AND/OR_OUTSTANDING_BOOKS - All fines must be paid and all books turned in before the senior's last day, May 30. After Friday, May 2, all fines and ticket purchases must be paid by cash or money order. Personal checks will not be accepted after May 2. Seniors cannot purchase All Night Party or prom tickets, and will not receive their cap and gown until all fines are paid and all books are returned.

CLASS_DAY - Tuesday, June 3, 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. - Hazel Park High School - Seniors should arrive no later than 8:30 a.m. Mandatory Class Day rehearsal is Monday, June 2, from 12:00 to 3:00 p.m. in the high school gymnasium. Students who do not attend rehearsal cannot participate in the ceremony. The ceremony will be held in the gymnasium and we encourage parents to attend. (We plan to televise both our Class Day and Commencement programs on Cable TV.)
Please do what you can to see that your son or daughter does not encourage any underclassmen to leave school after our Class Day program. Class Day is in no way intended to be a "day off" for underclassmen. They will earn their day when they qualify for graduation.

COMMENCEMENT - Friday, June 6, 7:00 p.m. - Hazel Park High School - Seniors should arrive no later than 6:30 p.m.

Mandatory Commencement rehearsal is Friday, June 6, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon at Hazel Park High School. Students who do not attend rehearsal cannot participate in the ceremony.

Commencement will be held on the Hazel Park High School athletic field. In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the high school gymnasium. Each senior will receive six (6) guest tickets for Commencement at Class Day rehearsal with their cap and gown. Tickets are necessary only if the ceremony is held inside or if reserved seating is required. If you need additional tickets, I suggest that you please ask your son or daughter to try and obtain them from another senior who does not need the full six. Additional tickets will be distributed to students after Commencement rehearsal. There will be reserved seating, at ground/floor level, for those who are physically unable to sit in the bleachers. Tickets for reserved seating will be available upon request, in exchange for regular seating tickets, at Class Day rehearsal on June 2.

MANDATORY STUDENT ATTENDANCE - All seniors must be in attendance for both Class Day and Commencement ceremonies as well as both of the preceding rehearsals. If students are not in attendance, the success of these ceremonies could be jeopardized. Please help us in this regard.

APPROPRIATE ATTIRE - Hazel Park High School has a fine tradition for quality Class Day and Commencement programs. These programs are formal in nature and allow proper recognition of individual achievement in a dignified setting. Much work and effort is necessary to maintain this tradition of dignified programs. We feel that the total attention one makes to his/her appearance adds significantly to the overall effect of a dignified ceremony.

For Class Day and Commencement ceremonies male graduates must wear a collared white dress shirt and a tie. They should also wear dark colored dress pants and dark colored dress shoes. Jeans and athletic shoes are not appropriate attire. Female graduates should wear a dress or skirt and blouse under their gown and dark colored dress shoes. Jewelry and/or corsages are not to be worn on the cap or gown at any time.

The cap should be worn so that one of the points is directly in front. It should be pulled down snuggly so that the top of the cap is flat with the head and the front point is visible on the wearer’s forehead. It should not be pointing up or resting on top of a hairdo. The tassel is worn on the right side of the mortarboard until all students have received their diploma and are told to move it to the left side, symbolizing the transition from candidate to graduate.

We are asking for your help in discussing with your son/daughter the reasons for our concern over individual appearance and its effect upon the total appearance of the class. The sacrifice for two programs is small but the effects in terms of the whole are great.

If your son or daughter has not yet ordered a cap and gown, this must be done IMMEDIATELY. Please contact Balfour at 248-689-4445.

CONDUCT - We expect all seniors to conduct themselves in a manner that will reflect favorably on all of us. Known improper conduct, especially consuming alcoholic beverages during school time or at any graduation event, will result in denying offenders further participation in graduation activities. I am always concerned about seniors celebrating too much after either Class Day or Commencement. Our high school has been fortunate that we have not had any serious accidents. Let us work hard to ensure our continued good fortune.

SENIOR ALL NIGHT PARTY - A committee of past and present high school parents is sponsoring the annual Senior All Night Party this year. This event has proven quite successful with those who have attended past parties. Encouraging your child to attend this event is one way of ensuring that he/she will have a safe graduation celebration, while spending an awesome evening with his/her peers.

This year the party will be held at Joe Dumars’ Fieldhouse (45300 Mound Road, just north of M-59, Shelby Township). Seniors will check in at the high school between 11:00 p.m. and 11:30 p.m. on June 6. They will then board a bus and be taken to the Fieldhouse where they will have a party like no other! There will be unlimited basketball, volleyball, Bayou Golf, high ropes course, Caj’n Cliffs, Gator Tag, in-line skating (must bring their own skates), bungee trampoline, inflatable slide, wax hands, photo booth, prizes and food, food, and more food. After all the fun, seniors will be bused back to the high school for a 5:00 a.m. release. Because of the location change, the date of ticket sales has changed and two (2) signed permission slips are now required (one from the school and one from Joe Dumars’). Tickets purchased by March 31 are $45.00. Tickets purchased April 1 through April 30 will be $55.00. We must have 80 participants in order to have the Senior All Night Party, so please buy your ticket now. All tickets purchased after May 1 will be $60.00, but remember; if 80 tickets are not sold by May 1, the party will be canceled and your money will be returned. Tickets will be sold at Parent/Teacher Conferences on March 27, or you can mail a check (payable to Senior All Night Party) with both permission slips to Ann Ayers, 1947 Wrenson, Ferndale, Michigan, 48220. If you have any questions, please call Ann Ayers at 248-259-1667 or Debbie Gehart at 248-439-1536. Please feel free to call me at 248-658-5100 if you have any concerns or questions regarding any of our graduation activities.

Sincerely,

Don Vogt, Principal
