Welcome to the Hazel Park High School Website

Dear Parents, Families and Friends:

Welcome to the 2015-2016 school year at Hazel Park High School!

I would first like to introduce myself to you.  I am Dr. Carla Postell, the new Principal at Hazel Park High School. I come to you from L'Anse Creuse Public Schools where I served as a High School Associate Principal for the past three years. I have also served as a High School Assistant Principal/Academy Director at Ypsilanti High School. Prior to becoming a school administrator, I held a number of teaching positions, including Reading Language Arts Teacher and High School English Teacher.  I also have experience teaching college level students who are working to obtain their Master of Arts in Educational Leadership.  Last, I earned my Doctorate of Education from Western Michigan University, and my Master of Arts in Education and Bachelors of Arts in English from the University of Michigan.

Now that you know a little bit more about me, I want you to know that I am hoping that your summer has gone well, and that you are just as excited as I am for the beginning of the new school year.  It is my privilege and honor to join the Hazel Park Schools community.  I look forward to an exciting school year as we work together to foster a culture of learning.

My goal is for us to provide all students with the opportunity to excel in academics, athletics, and the fine arts so that they may become positive, contributing members of our school and community.  We will accomplish this goal by setting high academic expectations for ALL students,  having staff and parents work together as a team, addressing school culture, engaging the community, and reaching out to parents for support with academic and behavioral concerns to ensure that all Hazel Park High School graduates are prepared for college and 21st century careers.

Again, I am very excited to be a member of the Hazel Park High School team.  I anticipate an exciting school year as we work together to foster a community of learning. I look forward to meeting and working with parents, staff, community members, and students to make this a great school year.

Thank you for the opportunity to serve your families in this role.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas you would like to share.

I hope you enjoy the final days of summer.

Educationally Yours,

Dr. Carla Postell

Annual Education Report

April 14, 2016

Dear Parents and Community Members:

We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER), which provides key information on the 2014-15 educational progress for Hazel Park High School. The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, accountability, and teacher quality. If you have any questions about the AER, please contact Dr. Carla Postell, principal, for assistance.

The AER is available for you to review electronically by visiting the following web site https://goo.gl/x5alRK, or you may review a copy in the main office at your child’s school.

The state has identified some schools with the status of Reward, Focus or Priority. A Reward school is one that is outperforming other schools in achievement, growth, or is performing better than other schools with a similar student population. A Focus school is one that has a large achievement gap in 30% of its student achievement scores. A Priority school is one whose achievement and growth is in the lowest 5% of all schools in the state. Our school has not been given one of those labels

Hazel Park High School has been identified as a “REWARD School” for High Progress and “Beating the Odds”.

State law requires that we also report additional information.

Students who live in Hazel Park are assigned to Hazel Park High School.  Students who reside within Oakland County may apply for 105 Schools of Choice Status.  Students who reside in counties contiguous to Oakland County (primarily Wayne and Macomb) may apply for 105C Schools of Choice Status.

During the 2014-2015 school year, Hazel Park High School, in conjunction with the Michigan Department of Education (AdvancED), went through the program evaluation tool to monitor for progress using an external data collection agency (Cambridge Educational Services).  This group helped monitor the effectiveness of the standardized testing programs we gave to our students and gave valuable data for the continuous school improvement process and look forward to an upcoming external review for continuing School Accreditation.

Hazel Park High School is a traditional school offering a wide range of classes including Advanced Placement courses, a strong core curriculum, a fine arts program, after-school clubs and activities and a variety of sports.  Students are able to acquire knowledge, both socially and academically.  Hazel Park High School also offers to its students the Promise Zone.  The Promise Zone guarantees all resident graduates of Hazel Park Schools a tuition-free path to an Associate’s degree at any accredited trade school, community college, college or university in the state of Michigan.  This confirms our commitment to a quality education.  Hazel Park High School had a total enrollment of 806 students for the 2014-2015 school year.  Hazel Park High School was the only school in the district to have improved enrollment numbers for the 2014-2015 school year.  We attribute this increase in enrollment to Schools of Choice and our improved academic and athletic programs.  Hazel Park High School has a diverse student population.  We are proud of our ethnic diversity and the harmony that exists amongst its almost 806 students.

The Michigan Department of Education provides an academic core curriculum that specifies the standards, benchmarks and content expectations at each grade level and content area K-12.  Hazel Park High School works to provide students with a comprehensive curriculum that meets their diverse needs and prepares them for a productive future.  The State of Michigan has adopted the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) as our curricular standards and benchmarks.  Information on the core curriculum is available at www.mi.gov/mde.

Parent-teacher conference participation has remained consistent the past 2 years with a slight increase from 33.6% to 35.8% (288 of 806) for fall conferences.  Spring parent-teacher conference numbers were slightly lower at 29.2%.  Hazel Park High School is committed to increasing parent participation and will look at ways to increase our conference attendance and parent involvement.

The number and percent of postsecondary enrollments (Dual Enrollment): Seven enrollments; 0.91%

Hazel Park High School has seven college equivalent courses with 60 enrollments (7.78%). 29 of the 50, or 58% of the enrollments, received a score leading to college credit.

For the 2014-2015 school year, HPHS continued to work at achieving the goals stated in The Transformation Redesign Plan.  While we are pleased to have reached some of our goals, we are continuously working to improve as we strive to help our students become college and career-ready. We continue to research and implement best practices to ensure that ALL students receive a quality education at Hazel Park High School.  We appreciate the continued support of parents, staff, student and community in this effort.

Sincerely,

Dr. Carla Postell

Principal

Hazel Park High School

MSTEP

Dear Parents,

Thank you for allowing Hazel Park to be part of your child’s education. Enclosed you will find the results of your child’s performance on the MSTEP, Michigan’s new statewide exam. As this is the first year of the exam there is little data to support the ranking of your child’s performance. Hazel Park will be using this information to chart progress year to year.

After nearly 45 years of the MEAP, the State of Michigan transitioned to the MSTEP. Many states across the country changed their test last year looking to introduce their students to more rigorous standards. Not only did your child likely take a more rigorous test last year, but took the MSTEP online. Michigan has adopted higher standards for students in English Language Arts and Mathematics, and the MSTEP was built to see how close our students are to reaching them.

This year’s test scores may be lower than results from the MEAP test because the MSTEP is not just new, it’s more challenging. This is not a reflection on Hazel Park students, but on all the progress that has been happening across Michigan. We encourage families to remember that these changes are good for our kids, and to keep them in perspective.

Teachers and parents can use student scores to make sure they’re doing the right things to support students. Working together, we can identify where students excel and where they need additional help, and find ways to better support students. Hazel Park believes that these tests are just one component that we will be using to measure the growth that your child is making year to year.

We will be placing a video produced by the State Board of Education on our website that you can view to give you more information regarding the MStep. We hope that this, with the scores, you will begin to understand some of the changes that have occurred with the state assessment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AM55xZZuNU

We are extremely excited in Hazel Park about the changes we are making in our schools. We are truly excited to begin a new era that focuses on every child’s individual growth and achievement. We look forward to our shared partnering in making a difference in your child’s education

As always please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Respectfully,

Amy Kruppe, Ed.D. Superintendent
